(AKA Law of Least Effort entry — Day 11)
Here we are!! The LAST day of 2016! What a year, friends, what a year…
We all have a myriad of things this year meant to us. Many feel that this year was a “wake up” call for our world. To be aware. To be informed. To be involved. To be engaged.
I feel the events of this year have called us to be active participants in a deeper way with the conversation of “What Kind of World Do I Want to Live In?”
As creators, as artists — I believe that is part of our job. We get to imagine the world that we want to live in, and to bring that INTO the world through our work.
It’s nothing sort of magic.
And in these very last days of 2016, I have noticed this interesting phenomenon with the messages I’ve been getting from the Universe. Interestingly enough, every book and article I’ve been reading, all online talks or podcasts I’ve been listening to, and the cumulative signs I’ve been receiving come back to the same idea: “What Makes You Happy?” “Follow your Joy,” “Use Your Heart as Your Compass.”
Sometimes I like to say jokingly to the Universe, “Okay, I hear you!!!” It’s SO EVERYWHERE!!!
But it’s like the big ol’ Divine wants me to clearly get this one.
I feel like the message is this: Your heart is how I show you what I want you to do. Listen to it.
We were SO not taught this. It takes a certain amount of consciousness to strip away all of that conditioning and to arrive at the place where we can put aside all the SHOULDS, NEED-TOS, and the HAVE-TOS so that we can hear that child-like, playful, and intuitive voice inside.
And that has definitely been my question for myself…
Where is my joy leading me?
I’m a big fan of Joesph Campbell and he believed that it was our job to identify where we are most passionate. We have all heard his famous phrase “follow your bliss.” And here’s how he says he arrived at that concept:
“Now, I came to this idea of bliss because in Sanskrit, which is the great spiritual language of the world, there are three terms that represent the brink, the jumping-off place to the ocean of transcendence: sat-chit-ananda. The word “Sat” means being. “Chit” means consciousness. “Ananda” means bliss or rapture. I thought, “I don’t know whether my consciousness is proper consciousness or not; I don’t know whether what I know of my being is my proper being or not; but I do know where my rapture is. So let me hang on to rapture, and that will bring me both my consciousness and my being.” I think it worked.”
Our Rapture? I wanted look up the definition so I could dig deeply into this concept, and what I found was: “intense pleasure or joy.”
Okay, I can follow that!!
Campbell also tells us, “We are having experiences all the time which may on occasion render some sense of this, a little intuition of where your bliss is. Grab it. No one can tell you what it is going to be. You have to learn to recognize your own depth.”
No one can tell us where our joy or rapture is, but US. And it is up to each one of us to “grab it.”
I adore the work of Regena Thomashauer and she loves to write about Rapture: “We are the generators of rapture. Rapture exists because we cast our spell. Because we decide. We are the possessors of the pixie dust. It glitters because we say so. “
Not only get to “grab” our bliss, we get to CREATE it. It’s as if Life is this HUGE canvas in front of us, and we get to say: “This is my masterpiece, what do I want to make? How do I want to make my existence full of its own glitter?”
And we have a whole brand spanking new year in front of us to experiment with the answer!!!
In a time where it seems there are so many problems in the world, and they are all calling out for our attention, Joseph Campbell has this wonderful advice: “Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world. We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.”
My friends, I’m wishing you a 2017 where your joy, your bliss, your heart, and your rapture lead you — and your divine creativity — from one adventure to the next. I know the beauty that you CREATE with your life affects the whole world… in ways beyond what we have the ability to see.
EXERCISE for Day 11:
Just notice, where is your joy? Where does your heart want to lead you?
