Your Heart’s Path

I’ve been thinking about Love a lot lately. Not romantic love, but the Love that is the strongest force on the planet. The Love that pulls us forward, that motivates our actions. Yeah, that groovy kind of Love…

I’ve also been thinking how my deepest desire is to fully embody the energy of Love and Joy in the actions I take, and to be conscious of the energy in my actions.

About ten years ago, I was in my living room in Souther California, and I remember a phrase popped into my head — “Your Heart’s Path.” And I thought, “Ooh, I want to teach on that! Actually, I want to understand it, and to live it. And then, I want to teach on that.”

I’ve always had an intuitive knowing that our Heart is how Spirit communicates to us. The vision that I got was that our Heart was like a compass in the middle of our chest, directing us to our Greatest Good. I believe that Life uses Love, the calling of our Hearts, to say “go this way! Make this decision!”

Unfortunately, many of us were taught to trust our head over our hearts. In fact, we have made it a lifetime skill to value the logic of the world, our culture, our families, all the things we “should” do, over where our Heart is calling us at this moment.

I’ve often wondered to myself… If I really had enough courage to follow my heart ALL the time, and to let Love take over me and lead me, what would my life look like? How would my choices be different? How many automatic decisions are just being made from my conditioning? How do I listen even deeper???

And you know what ELSE I’ve noticed, that when I choose my heart, the Universe FINANCES it! It’s true — all the resources suddenly become available, the time and space get made, and the path becomes clear when I’m brave enough to take a stand for my heart! It’s WILD!!! It’s nothing short of magic to me.

I also find that my playful creative nature is tied to harnessing the forces of Love and Joy in my life. And so, when I ignite PLAY in my life, and see my life as a time to PLAY, then Love and Joy is naturally infused in my actions, and life is just a WHOLE LOT MORE FUN!

So, when I get quiet, and I ask, “where is my Heart leading me right now?” — the answer is often directly tied to, “where do I want to Play?” And when I take a bold step in that direction, suddenly the way is made out of no way…

Leaning Into You…

A couple of weeks ago in CREATE, we’ve were talking about going from an Amateur to a Professional, and discussing Steven Pressfield’s amazing book “Turning Pro” as our jumping off point to creating new behaviors that are in alignment with our Highest Self.

“When we’re living as amateurs, we’re running away from our calling—meaning our work, our destiny, the obligation to become our truest and highest selves.” — Steven Pressfield

And its interesting, that sometimes we think Becoming Pro means we have to work harder — its like we have some idea of “growing up” or “buckling down.” But what if becoming a pro was more about BECOMING MORE OURSELVES. As in, what is MOST in our heart? What most lights us up??? What if it was about honoring our child-like playful desires in the most healthy way? And then developing habits and behaviors that support that Light?

Steven Pressfield says, “The difference between an amateur and a professional is in their habits. An amateur has amateur habits. A professional has professional habits. We can never free ourselves from habit. But we can replace bad habits with good ones. We can trade in the habits of the amateur and the addict for the practice of the professional and the committed artist or entrepreneur.”

The thing with creating new behaviors is that we can do it a little bit at a time. Best-selling author Kathy Freston has a term for going vegan that she calls “leaning in.” As in, we don’t have to jump all the way off the cliff. We can go little by little, and start change one bit at a time.

So, as we think about coming into alignment with our best self, and creating habits that support that, we can think of little bits of change.

One way I like to think about figuring out what that might look like is asking our Highest Self, what is one action I can take, one new habit or behavior, that will get me pointing into the direction of where my vision is pulling me…

In a way, it can be like traveling and having a conversation with our Future Self… and saying, “Tell me about who you are. How do you create your life?”

What if we started there? How does my Highest and Best self want to spend their days? And then, little by little, we start moving in that direction…

Brave Enough For Bliss

Can I tell you something about myself? I really like to follow my bliss. And increasingly, I have found that its more difficult NOT to. In fact, even in writing this blog, and thinking I’m going to do a series… When it comes to Spirit, sometimes Life starts leading me in another way, and I hear the voice with in say, “talk about THIS now…follow this road.” As cute and organized as I think staying with a topic for awhile is, t’s just not where I want to be. I want to talk about what is going on in me RIGHT NOW.

So, what am I thinking about at this moment?

As a creator, I’m someone who craves HUGE amounts of alone time. It’s how I get in touch with my heart, and what is going on in the deeper parts of me. It’s how I get in touch where my yearnings, and the directions I’m getting called. I feel like I’m becoming even more curious about what moves me.

And that seems to be my daily (if not hourly!) question, where am I being pulled? Where does my charm want to pull me? What direction is Life asking me to move in?

Right now, I’m sitting in the hospital with a loved one, getting a glimpse how short our time is here on the planet. And knowing how finite this human experience is, I feel like there is a reminder is this to give ourselves to what we love and what lights us up. There is no other reason to be here if not in service to our hearts, our dreams, our loves, our communities, and our world. We are the Gift to them, and they, in turn, are a Gift to us.

So, in asking myself about where am I being pulled, I’m also asking myself where am I holding onto things/habits/behaviors/people/beliefs that don’t light me up or make me feel alive. Where can I let go and make space for more bliss and love in my life?

Here’s what my buddy Joesph Campbell said, “Poets are simply those who have made a profession and a lifestyle of being in touch with their bliss. Most people are concerned with other things. They get themselves involved in economic and political activities, or get drafted into a war that isn’t the one they’re interested in, and it may be difficult to hold to this umbilical under those circumstances. That is a technique each one has to work out for himself somehow.”

Yes! I make a profession and lifestyle of being in touch with my bliss!! He went on in this same interview to say: “There’s something inside you that knows when you’re in the center, that knows when you’re on the beam or off the beam.  And if you get off the beam to earn money, you’ve lost your life.  And if you stay in the center and don’t get any money, you still have your bliss.”

So, can I make my bliss and following it my guiding compass? Can I be brave enough to give myself permission for more and more bliss?

“The religious people tell us we really won’t experience bliss until we die and go to heaven. But I believe in having as much as you can of this experience while you are still alive.”

Okay, Joesph, that is what I will do!!

I have had a DAY full of the Law of Least Effort… you know, when you are just following your bliss and letting one thing unfold into the next effortlessly…

And I think the reasons I love studying the Law of Least Effort, is that I often have ego voice in the back of my head (that is so seductive!) that wants to say to me, “Are you doing enough?”

And one of my Achilles heels is the tendency to do TOO MUCH. It has to do with my zest for life, my huge curiosity, my endless creativity, but in there is also a part that has put too much value on accomplishing. As opposed to letting life be lived THROUGH me.

And I was looking up Deepak’s definition of The Law of Least Effort today and I saw this sentence: “This law is based on the fact that nature’s intelligence functions with effortless ease and abandoned carefreeness.”

Abandoned carefreeness.

I think this just became my favorite phrase in all of the world.

YES! My Spirit yells out!!!

I love abandoned carefreeness. That is when I’m in the zone.

I know in the center of my heart, that is how I’m being called to live.

So lets’s break this down: “Abandoned” in this context means “unrestrained, uninhibited, wild, impulsive.” And “carefreeness” means “lighthearted, joyful, without anxiety or worry.”

Isn’t that how we ALL want to give ourselves permission to be? Free? Without worry? Full of joy and ease?

And what I love about this Law is that it says that it IS how we were meant to live.

I dig me a good Jesus passage, and I think of the part in the book of Matthew that talks about how the birds are always fed, and the flowers are always clothed in the most beautiful ways. And how much more are we loved? And that worrying about stuff doesn’t do anything. We can trust that all of our needs are provided for, before we even ask.

I feel like there is SO MUCH conditioning around the phrase “hard work” in our society, and I don’t know if its helping us. I think perhaps the real calling is to let our soul express itself in the most playful of ways…

So dance, be wild, follow your impulses, and enjoy your precious beautiful life!!  Be sweet to yourself and drink of every bit of joy that is here to be had!!

Everything is going to get done. Everything will be taken care of.

Follow Life. Let It Lead You.

EXERCISE for Day 13

What does “abandoned carefreeness” look like to you? What is one way today that you want to demonstrate this in your life?

The Law of Least Effort – Day 12

The more I write about the Law of Least Effort, the more I realize its about moving in harmony with Existence itself. And this, of course, implies that we must listen to Life, and to the Spirit within us, in order to do so.

I truly believe we have to SLOW DOWN to really MOVE.

Isn’t it fascinating? Getting still is the fast track to our dreams.

You know the TV show that just came to mind? Quantum Leap. Do you remember that one? Where Scott Bakula moved from one time period to another solving problems. I loved that show!!

And I think of how we leap forward in terms of consciousness is by going within… It enables us, like Mr. Bakula, to move faster than the speed of light.

A couple of days ago, I was listening to a Tony Robbins talk (as I did the dishes the other day!My favorite place to listen to talks) and he said he loves Business because its “Spirit made manifest.” Isn’t that what Creativity is too? Its Spirit made manifest through your art?

ULTIMATELY what we intend to do, whether in business or in art, is take Spirit from the unseen realm and bring it to the seen realm. So, doesn’t it make sense that the more time we spend in Spirit, then the more CLEAR we can become on what the vision is, and the instructions on how to bring it forward?

It is this kind of deep listening that creates the space where we move in harmony with Life Itself.

EXERCISE for Day 12:

Take some time today just to listen deeply to Life…listen deeply to Your Spirit. Ask it to reveal what wants to be made manifest through you.

Last Day of 2016!!!!

(AKA Law of Least Effort entry — Day 11)

Here we are!! The LAST day of 2016! What a year, friends, what a year…

We all have a myriad of things this year meant to us. Many feel that this year was a “wake up” call for our world. To be aware. To be informed. To be involved. To be engaged.

I feel the events of this year have called us to be active participants in a deeper way with the conversation of “What Kind of World Do I Want to Live In?”

As creators, as artists — I believe that is part of our job. We get to imagine the world that we want to live in, and to bring that INTO the world through our work.

It’s nothing sort of magic.

And in these very last days of 2016, I have noticed this interesting phenomenon with the messages I’ve been getting from the Universe. Interestingly enough, every book and article I’ve been reading,  all online talks or podcasts I’ve been listening to, and the cumulative signs I’ve been receiving come back to the same idea: “What Makes You Happy?” “Follow your Joy,” “Use Your Heart as Your Compass.”

Sometimes I like to say jokingly to the Universe, “Okay, I hear you!!!” It’s SO EVERYWHERE!!!

But it’s like the big ol’ Divine wants me to clearly get this one.

I feel like the message is this: Your heart is how I show you what I want you to do. Listen to it.

We were SO not taught this. It takes a certain amount of consciousness to strip away all of that conditioning and to arrive at the place where we can put aside all the SHOULDS, NEED-TOS, and the HAVE-TOS so that we can hear that child-like, playful, and intuitive voice inside.

And that has definitely been my question for myself…

Where is my joy leading me?

I’m a big fan of Joesph Campbell and he believed that it was our job to identify where we are most passionate. We have all heard his famous phrase “follow your bliss.” And here’s how he says he arrived at that concept:

“Now, I came to this idea of bliss because in Sanskrit, which is the great spiritual language of the world, there are three terms that represent the brink, the jumping-off place to the ocean of transcendence: sat-chit-ananda. The word “Sat” means being. “Chit” means consciousness. “Ananda” means bliss or rapture. I thought, “I don’t know whether my consciousness is proper consciousness or not; I don’t know whether what I know of my being is my proper being or not; but I do know where my rapture is. So let me hang on to rapture, and that will bring me both my consciousness and my being.” I think it worked.”

Our Rapture? I wanted look up the definition so I could dig deeply into this concept, and what I found was: “intense pleasure or joy.”

Okay, I can follow that!!

Campbell also tells us, “We are having experiences all the time which may on occasion render some sense of this, a little intuition of where your bliss is. Grab it. No one can tell you what it is going to be. You have to learn to recognize your own depth.”

No one can tell us where our joy or rapture is, but US. And it is up to each one of us to “grab it.”

I adore the work of Regena Thomashauer and she loves to write about Rapture: “We are the generators of rapture.  Rapture exists because we cast our spell.  Because we decide.  We are the possessors of the pixie dust.  It glitters because we say so. “

Not only get to “grab” our bliss, we get to CREATE it. It’s as if Life is this HUGE canvas  in front of us, and we get to say: “This is my masterpiece, what do I want to make? How do I want to make my existence full of its own glitter?”

And we have a whole brand spanking new year in front of us to experiment with the answer!!!

In a time where it seems there are so many problems in the world, and they are all calling out for our attention, Joseph Campbell has this wonderful advice: “Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world. We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.”

My friends, I’m wishing you a 2017 where your joy, your bliss, your heart, and your rapture lead you — and your divine creativity — from one adventure to the next. I know the beauty that you CREATE with your life affects the whole world… in ways beyond what we have the ability to see.

EXERCISE for Day 11:

Just notice, where is your joy? Where does your heart want to lead you?
